Hike from Milan to the sea – Path of the Celts and Ligurians

The ‘Sentiero dei Celti e dei Liguri’ (Path of the Celts and Ligurians) is a new long-distance hiking trail that crosses three regions of Northern Italy: Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. Starting in Milan, the trail weaves through beautiful landscapes to Sestri Levante on the Ligurian Sea. In between, you’ll hike from the plain to the hills and up to the Apennine Mountains.

In this Collection, I’ve divided the 233-kilometre (145 mi) route – which totals 6,700 metres (22,000 ft) of elevation gain – over ten days. Of course, you can adjust the route to your needs. The most challenging stretches are along the spine of Italy, the Apennines, where the trail arrives in Piacenza territory between the Tidone and Trebbia valleys, touching Bobbio and then Mount Penna, the true heart of the itinerary and a peak dedicated by the Ligurian tribes to the god Pen.

The very name of the Apennines seems to derive from this ancient divinity. Here, you’ll touch the beauty of the Aveto Natural Regional Park and the sources of the Taro and Ceno rivers. Between high passes and breathtaking viewpoints, you’ll also walk on the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, in Val Graveglia, the most geologically interesting area in Italy, until you reach Sestri Levante and the sea.

The logo of the path – which you can see here: sentierodeicelti.it (in Italian) – is inspired by the helmet that was common to Celtic and Ligurian warriors. You can see a preserved helmet in Pontremoli, Pulica. Another similar helmet, which belonged to a Celtic warrior, was found at Casaselvatica di Berceto and is now in Parma. The trail follows in the footsteps of these pre-Roman tribes.

There’s a good choice of accommodation along the route and numerous opportunities to discover typical dishes thanks to the many inns, agritourisms, small restaurants and inland establishments. In some places, however, such as Nibbiano or Colombarone, I recommend you book in advance or consider wild camping as options are limited. The Sentiero dei Celti e dei Liguri will enable you to discover an enchanting area that will provide memories for a lifetime.

You can tackle the route at any time of the year except for winter, when you may encounter snow on some sections. Always carry the necessary equipment for sudden temperature changes and a waterproof jacket, especially for the Apennines.

You’ll have no problem finding groceries or drinking fountains along the route. The starting point is Piazza Duomo in Milan, which is connected by metro to the city's railway stations. The route finishes at the railway station in Sestri Levante.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your rucksack ready and set off on this path!
