The Alta Via del Centenario (old road of the Centenary) is a grandiose 66-kilometre (41 mi) loop with 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) of elevation gain. The route leads along the Lagorai mountain chain in Italy’s Trentino region. This itinerary takes place at high altitude and traces part of the Translagorai, a multi-day hiking route. It then continues along the Alta Via del Granito towards the granite group of Cima d'Asta and Cimon Rava before returning to the starting point at the Manghen Pass.

On this Tour, you can admire incredible landscapes in the valleys and encounter beautiful alpine lakes, mountain pastures and mountain huts. The Alta Via del Centenario is also steeped in history. You’ll come across trenches, walkways and structures dating back to the Second World War.

This is a journey into one of the wildest and most remote alpine environments. Despite being located in the heart of the Fiemme Dolomites, the rock is of volcanic origin. The Lagorai’s porphyry rocks are magmatic rocks that solidified on the surface after an eruption, while the Cima d'Asta granites are intrusive magmatic rocks that solidified within the earth's crust and emerged following tectonic activity.

This hike isn’t technically difficult, however the harshness and severity of the environment make it more challenging. You need to be fit, surefooted, and experienced on steep terrain as you'll hike along sharp and unstable porphyry and granite rocks.

I recommend undertaking this trek from June to October, depending on the weather forecast. Towards the end of the season the refuges may be closed and you’ll need to pack a tent and sleeping bag or rely on winter shelters.

At the beginning of summer, you can often still find snow on the paths, especially towards Cima d'Asta, the highest peak in the Fiemme Mountains. In this case, bring gaiters and crampons with you. Make sure you book your overnight stays in the refuges in advance, especially In the height of the summer season.

You’ll spot numerous road signs on your way to the Manghen Pass. By car, you can follow the tortuous but comfortable SP31 from Borgo Valsugana commune. From there, the 23 kilometres (14 mi) to Val Calamento takes about 40 minutes. At the pass, there’s a restaurant with parking, but it doesn’t offer accommodation. From Molina di Fiemme, you’ll drive 17 kilometres (10 mi) along a comfortable asphalt road.
