The Auvergne is a volcanic region in the heart of France that offers an exceptional playground for mountain bike enthusiasts. From granitic mountains to dense forests and crater lakes, you'll find yourself riding a rich variety of routes. This Collection includes some of the most beautiful routes in the Haute-Loire department as well as the ten stages of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central, recognised as the longest mountain bike crossing in France.

From Allier to Cantal, via the Puy-de-Dôme and the lands of the Haute-Loire, these routes cross the region. From the plains of the north to the volcanoes of the Massif Central, you'll discover landscapes shaped by the erosion of time. You'll explore towns with a rich heritage such as Moulins, Riom and Saint-Flour, which have been awarded the ‘Pays d'art et d'histoire’ label – which recognises the quality of the heritage, architecture and living environment – as well as Clermont-Ferrand and Volvic.

The Collection also takes in the south of Auvergne, between the Sancy massif, the unique territory of the Cantal and the ridges of the Haute-Loire. Here, on both the GTMC routes and the local circuits, lakes and châteaux dot the edges of the paths. You'll discover the Cézallier plateau, the banks of the Serouine and the Ally plateau, the land of windmills.

These routes alternate between gravel passes, technical trails and small country roads, keeping off the main roads for most of the time. Some sections may require you to dismount, depending on your level. So, don't hesitate to adjust the length of the stages to suit you.

We recommend a low-geared mountain bike to get you over the climbs more easily, and 2.2-inch tyres for greater comfort.

You'll have no trouble refuelling throughout the route. However, we’d recommend taking at least 1.5 litres of water with you. The weather in the Puy-de-Dôme and Haute-Loire regions can be changeable, so remember to bring a waterproof jacket.

We wish you a pleasant journey!
