European Divide Trail across the Iberian Peninsula – central

The European Divide Trail (EDT) is the longest cycle route in the world. It crosses the European continent over 7,600 kilometres (4,722 mi) from north to south, from Grense Jakobselv in Norway to Cape St Vincent in Portugal. To find out more, visit europeandividetrail.com.

This Collection focuses on the section from Teruel to Jaén in Spain. The route takes you through mountains where wild nature thrives. It’s dotted with charming little villages, populated by humble and generous people. The Rincón de Ademuz, the gorges of the Cabriel and Júcar rivers, the Sierra de Alcaraz and the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park are some of the highlights of this section.

I have created two other Collections which, together with this one, complete the EDT itinerary through the Iberian Peninsula. You can find them at the following links: komoot.com/collection/2361284 and komoot.com/collection/2362884.

About halfway along the route, you'll pass through the city of Albacete. Here, you'll find a good range of accommodation, places to eat and drink, shops and more. It's the ideal place to fix any mechanical problems and stock up on supplies.

You’ll need good fitness to get the most out of this experience as the days are long and demanding. For the most part, you'll be cycling on dirt roads and trails. At the end of each day, you’ll have accumulated quite a bit of elevation gain. If you like to escape into nature and get away from civilisation, this section is a paradise.

Every stage ends in a town with accommodation and restaurants. As the days are fairly strenuous, you can save the weight of camping and cooking equipment by choosing to stay in a guesthouse or hotel. What's more, each day you'll pass through several towns where you can stock up on supplies. However, make sure you always take a few snacks and plenty of water.

A gravel or mountain bike with suspension is ideal for the route of this Collection. In principle, you can ride the tour on almost any bike, but for comfort, you should make sure you have wide tyres and gears suitable for mountainous terrain.

This adventure can be enjoyed at any time of year. However, you should be aware that winters are cold. At higher altitudes, there may even be snow. Summers, on the other hand, are very hot. Don't forget to check the weather forecast before you leave, so that you can adapt your equipment accordingly.

Public transport is available at the start and the end of the route. Both Teruel and Jaén have bus and train stations. If you have the opportunity to extend your holiday, I recommend spending a day in each of them. They are steeped in history and have a lot to offer.

Without further ado, get your bike serviced, pack your panniers and head off across these magical lands. Enjoy your trip!
