In a corner of the Atlantic, in the southwest of Spain, lies a territory that was formed a million years ago. Here, the earth decided to turn black and decorate its skin with hundreds of craters. Little by little, laurisilva forests, pine forests and junipers grew up and found here the perfect place to sway to the sound of the winds. The waves, in turn, carved marvellous shapes into the cliffs in their incessant search for the impossible.

This land is El Hierro, an island divided in two by an impressive crescent-shaped mountain ridge. On both sides of the massif, the view opens out onto endless volcanic landscapes, vertiginous paths, natural pools and imposing cliffs. The vegetation seems to glow even brighter next to the island's black-tinted terrain.

Before El Hierro was conquered by the Crown of Castile, the island's inhabitants were mainly herders and farmers. In the absence of external trade routes, they were forced to cross the island in a multitude of ways to exchange their resources. In this Collection, I present a journey along these traditional paths to discover this corner of the Canary Islands.

In this Collection, I’ve divided the route into six routes of moderate intensity. Although there are no particularly technical sections, you’ll need a good level of fitness to tackle the distance and gradients.

All the stages end in towns where you can find accommodation (mostly rural houses) and other services. Only on the third day is it advisable to do your shopping before arriving at your destination, as it’s possible nothing will be open. Book all overnight stays in advance.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to replenish your supplies, so there’s no need to carry large quantities of food. However, make sure you always carry plenty of water and some snacks.

The Canary Islands enjoy a mild climate all year round, so you can complete this adventure at any time. However, bear in mind that in summer the temperatures are somewhat higher and there tends to be a greater influx of tourists. For this reason, it’s best to opt for spring or autumn.

Whatever the season, pack sun cream, a waterproof jacket and some warm layers. Trekking poles can help support your knees on the more demanding sections.

There’s no bus connection to the starting point, so I recommend booking a taxi via: transhierro.com/servicios/taxis-en-el-hierro. At the end of the walk, at Pozo de la Salud, take bus number 12 to Frontera bus station. From there, you can connect with the rest of the island. You can find the timetables on this page: transhierro.com/servicios/transporte-regular.

I wish you a wonderful time on the traditional trails of El Hierro. Enjoy!
