Nestled at 950 metres (3117 ft), Cauterets is an emblematic Pyrenean spa town with remarkable architectural and natural heritage. The town has a warm and inviting atmosphere and offers plenty of year-round outdoor activities such as skiing, multiple hiking trails and a renowned spa. You’ll also find lots of places to stay, eat and shop.
There’s an abundance of exceptional natural wonders around Cauterets. The serene Lac de Gaube, the awe-inspiring Vignemale peak, and the invigorating Marcadau Valley are all included in this Collection. On a four-day adventure, you'll traverse from the depths of the valley to lofty mountain passes, tracing the edges of picturesque alpine lakes.
This itinerary follows extensive long-distance footpaths like the GR 10 and the HRP (Haute Route Pyrénéenne). You’ll find a selection of gîtes and refuges en route, which I recommend booking well in advance. Check the stage descriptions for more detailed information.
This panoramic loop around Cauterets often exceeds the 2,000-metre (6,500 ft) threshold. Consequently, the ideal time to embark on this journey is from early June to late September, mitigating the challenges posed by excessive snow. Robust hiking boots are advisable to navigate rocky sections comfortably. Packing ample provisions for lunch is also important, although evening meals can be arranged at the refuges. Additionally, water filters and purification tablets are essential to ensure you have continuous water supply.
Your journey commences from the town centre, close to the town hall. Cauterets is a 45-minute drive from Lourdes airport and 30 kilometres (18.6 mi) from Lourdes train station. The town is also connected to the liO 965 bus service. For further details, see: cauterets.com/app/uploads/2023/04/BUS-965.pdf.

Plan your own version of this adventure in the multi-day planner based on the stages suggested in this Collection.
The first stage of this loop starting from Cauterets is the shortest in terms of kilometers. However, the more than 1,000 meters of elevation gain to reach the Ilhéou refuge make it quite demanding. This first day has the particularity of being almost exclusively uphill on the GR 10 route.

The final stage of your roaming is to reach Cauterets from the emblematic Oulettes refuge. To do so, the course essentially includes negative elevation by evolving on the GR 10 course. Along the way, you will discover the famous Gaube lake and incomparable landscapes.
