Path no. 1 of the Alta Via dell'Adamello is the main hiking route of the Adamello. The trail was the creation of guide and author, Renato Floreancigh, who died in the mountains in 1987, and to whom this wonderful itinerary is dedicated.

It was in 1969 when Renato Floreancigh came up with the idea of a route linking the entire Adamello massif. Today, the trail winds its way through grassy pastures, over stony ground, across scree slopes, snowfields, passes and ridges. It follows mule tracks and paths from the Great War, a symbol of the soldiers' ability to create substantial military structures.

The itinerary begins at the Tita Secchi Refugio, on the shores of Lago della Vacca, and ends at the Garibaldi Refugio, close to Lago Venerocolo, passing by the Maria and Franco, Città di Lissone, Prudenzini, Gnutti and Tonolini refugios along the way.

Two new stretches have recently been added, extending the itinerary and making it possible to start directly from the Trenord railway station in Breno to that of Edolo, where you can catch a train back to the start.

Each stage covers from 7 to 15 kilometres (4.3 to 9.3 mi) and ascends to between 350 and 3,000 metres (1,140 and 9,840 ft) above sea level. The Alta Via Adamello is a fascinating route, both for the majesty and variety of its scenery and for the diversity of flora that characterises the entire region throughout the seasons.

At each refuge, you’re free to deviate from the main route and explore the surrounding area, including descending to the valley below.

Between 1915 and 1918, Path no. 1, together with the Pian di Neve area on Monte Adamello, was a scene of conflict during the First World War, which at these altitudes was renamed the White War. As you walk along the Alta Via dell'Adamello, you’ll come across the remains of military settlements, including trenches, walls, caves and other structures.

The refuges you’ll encounter along the route are logistical support points, but also great sources of information on the local area, including suggestions on things to do and see nearby. You can undertake the route in short stages starting from the valley floor, as there are access paths from each main valley.

You’ll need a good level of fitness, and mountaineering skills and equipment suitable for high mountains. Since it has very exposed equipped trails in some sections, the trail should only be undertaken if you are a mountaineer or accompanied by experts or mountain guides. Always check the conditions of the route with the mountain huts before setting out.

Path no. 1 is a classic high route characterised by wild environments, far removed from the world of consumerist hiking. This is a route for true mountain lovers, to be tackled with dedication and respect, and a source of incredible satisfaction at the price of honest toil.
