The main purpose of the Cistercian Route is to link the three Cistercian monasteries of Poblet, Vallbona de les Monges and Santes Creus. Originally designed as a long-distance trail, the GR175, this itinerary has been gaining popularity. It has two official versions, one for hiking and the other for mountain bikes. Editor, Peaknik, has also designed an alternative and specific version for gravel: komoot.com/collection/1826216
In this Collection I present the official MTB route. It's 118 kilometres (73 mi) long with almost 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) of elevation gain. Although it could be tackled in a single day, I've divided it into two. This way, you’ll have time to enjoy the incredible trails and the beautiful natural environment. You’ll also appreciate the historical significance of this region, which is evident in its beautiful villages.
Forests of oak, holm oak and pine trees; extensive vineyards and long fields of crops; castles, monasteries and wineries; tracks, cobbled roads and singletrack trails: you have two days of fun on wheels ahead of you in which you will ride through a variety of landscapes, terrains and villages.
The trip is circular, with start and end points in Santes Creus. If you decide to drive, it’s around a half an hour's drive from Tarragona and one hour from Barcelona. You can also get there easily by bus from Tarragona.
You can do this trip at any time of the year, but I’d recommend spring and autumn as these are the seasons when the landscapes are at their best. Moreover, the temperatures are ideal for cycling.
I’d also advise planning your visits to the monasteries and booking your accommodation well in advance.
You’ll pass through towns and villages along the way where you can refill your water and buy food. However, it’s always a good idea to have enough fluids and snacks on you at all times.
Any type of mountain bike is suitable for this route. With a full suspension bike you’ll enjoy the downhills and some broken sections more and the flatter parts of the route less. With a hardtail bike, it will be just the opposite – you'll ride more slowly through the technical sections and pedal more comfortably on the flats and climbs.

The trip begins in the town of Santes Creus, where the first of the three Cistercian monasteries that join this Route is located. After crossing the river Gaià, you briefly use the TP-2002 road to reach the beginning of the Camí de les Planes del Pont, where you face the first climb of the day. You cross…

The second stage of the trip leaves from Vallbona de les Monges. You leave the town along the Camí del Cot de l'Olla and pedal, slightly uphill, until you reach Rocallura, where I recommend you visit the beautiful church of San Lorenzo.
You follow the paths that take you to Belltall, Forès and Rocafort…
