The aptly-named Drôme des Collines is a hilly region in southeast France. Stretching from the Rhône Valley in the west to the Chambaran plateau in the east, it’s often referred to as the "larder" of the Drôme, being predominantly agricultural. The region produces some excellent wines, including Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage, as well as fruit such as apricots and peaches. But the Drôme des Collines is also a place marked by its industrial history. It was the spearhead of the shoe industry in Roman times and of the Valrhôna chocolate industry, with its factory in Tain-l'Hermitage.

This region offers great diversity, both in terms of the nature of the terrain and its many viewpoints. It boasts a vast succession of green hills that are a treat for mountain bikers, while its topology makes it an accessible area.

In this Collection, I invite you to discover this land of contrasts. I've divided the Drôme des Collines MTB route into three stages of around 65 kilometres (40 km) each, with an average of 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) of elevation gain per day. This version is 30 kilometres (19 mi) longer than the official route, as it provides access to stopover towns that offer accommodation, as well as some great detours to discover the treasures of the region.

To join the itinerary, I suggest starting your journey at the TER station in Saint-Vallier-sur-Rhône. Ideally located on the north-south axis, this station is easily accessible with the TER trains of the Rhône-Alpes region (about 50 minutes from Lyon).

The Collection includes some technical sections and some very steep climbs and is aimed at intermediate-level riders. Be prepared to climb and descend constantly on each route. I recommend a mountain bike with at least 2.2-inch tyres for greater comfort; hardtail or full-suspension, depending on your equipment; and with a 51- or 52-tooth cassette if you have a single chainring.

Given the altitude and climate of the region, you can enjoy this ride all year round. However, if you want to take full advantage of the Drôme environment, the best time to venture out on the trails is between April and September.

Water and refreshment points are relatively easy to reach, but I’d suggest setting off with at least a litre of water and enough food to last you half a day. Don't forget to plan ahead when booking accommodation, which can be tricky in summer.

Enjoy your trip!
