Would you like to go for a relaxed bike ride and unwind? Perhaps you want to spend a nice day in the fresh air with the whole family? Then you've come to the right place. In this Collection, I introduce you to the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route. You can enjoy the green landscapes of the Saarland-Palatinate border region on one of the most beautiful railway tracks in Germany.

Fritz Wunderlich, after whom this Tour is named, was one of the most important tenors of the 20th century and is one of the most famous sons of the town of Kusel. Follow in his footsteps on the cycle path. It takes you from Freisen in the Saarland via Kusel to Altenglan in the Palatinate or vice versa. The Tour covers a total of almost 30 kilometres (19 mi) on very good roads. Asphalt or fine gravel ensures that you can make excellent progress on a trekking bike. Of course, you can also do the Tour on a mountain or gravel bike.

The special feature of the route is that it has a slight downhill slope almost all the way in the direction of Kusel. This makes it very suitable for less-trained cyclists. The cycle path is also perfect for families with children as it’s routed away from road traffic through the varied landscape. There are some exciting highlights along the way, too.

Whether young or old, one of the most exciting places on the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route is certainly Lichtenberg Castle. To reach it, you have to cycle up a small hill, but it's worth the effort. From the keep, you can enjoy an impressive view and then stop for a bite to eat in the castle restaurant. But there’s more to discover on the way. For example, the impressive Oberkirchen viaduct, where you can cross the outskirts of the village of Oberkirchen at a height of 30 metres (100 ft).

As the cycle path ends directly at the railway station in Altenglan, you can return home by train. Further information on arrival and departure can be found in the route description.

So nothing stands in the way of a relaxed cycling trip. Get your bike ready and enjoy the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route.
