The Oglio Cyle Route is made up of cycle paths in the provinces of Brescia, Bergamo, Cremona and Mantua. Over 280 kilometres (174 mi), you discover a spectacular part of Lombardy. You ride through the peaks of the Adamello Group, down the Camonica Valley, along the shores of the magnificent Lake Iseo, through the river parks of the Oglio Nord and Oglio Sud, among the rolling hills of Franciacorta and across the tranquil Po Valley.

The route was put together by several local authorities and the project’s influence has extended beyond Italy’s borders. This is a cycle path that promotes sustainable transport within Europe.

To get to the starting point from the Trento area, you can take your bike on the cableway between Passo del Tonale and Ponte di Legno, rather than cycling along the state road.

From Vezza d'Oglio, continue to Capo di Ponte along the gentle slopes of the recently completed section. You can easily navigate in both directions, as the route is signposted. Follow the signs that say ‘Po’ if you ride from north to south, or ‘Tonale’ if you south to north.

From here, the 'Pista ciclabile Camuna' (Camuna cycle path) begins, leading through natural landscapes and urban areas for 40 kilometres (25 mi) and ending on the magical shores of Lake Iseo.

Next up is one of the highlights of this adventure: the Vello-Toline cycle path. You ride along the lake’s eastern shore and immerse yourself in the famous Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve. From Sarnico, you head towards the Oglio River, cross the Franciacorta territories and its vineyards and visit small villages steeped in tradition.

Beyond the two river parks of the northern Oglio and southern Oglio, you finally reach the Po, in the heart of the Cremonese and Mantuan plains. Here, the course of the river gradually slows and the banks widen into gentle slopes.

Almost the entire Upper Camonica Valley Cycle Path is served by the rail (Brescia-Iseo-Edolo) so you can easily hop on a train to ride only part of the route.

I recommend this adventure in spring and autumn, when the temperatures are perfect. Summer is perfect for enjoying the vivid colours of the landscape, but avoid riding during the hottest hours of the day.

The route is an ideal cycle Tour on most types of bike, though road bikes might be a little problematic on the unpaved sections.
