Between peaks and glaciers — the Aiguilles Rouges Tour
A true expedition into the high mountains, the Aiguilles Rouges Tour offers you unparalleled panoramic views of the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif. Here’s what awaits you, in a few words: five days walking along narrow, high paths; discovering a series of remarkable alpine lakes; and admiring the fauna and flora for which the region is famous. Wherever you are on the route, chamois, marmots and ibex are never far away, nibbling the grasses.
Straddling the Aiguilles Rouges, Passy and Vallon de Bérard nature reserves, the route allows you to get close up to the epic Aiguilles Rouges massif. It’s suitable for anyone who’s already spent some time in the mountains and who’s looking for a nice, adventurous hike. If you want to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc but are not quite sure if you’re up to it, the Aiguilles Rouges Tour is a great test. The hike takes you to the foot of Mont Buet, which I suggest you climb on stage 4. This peak is the highest point of the route, at 3,098 metres (10,165 ft) above sea level, and has a 360° view of a stunning array of peaks, aiguilles and glaciers.
Each stage ends at a hut. Accommodation is not necessarily plentiful, so I recommend that you book your nights well in advance. You should also know that wild camping is allowed in the three reserves as long as you only camp between 7 pm and 9 am.
The Aiguilles Rouges Tour starts and ends at Buet train station, easily accessible by TER from Chamonix. I advise you to hike this Tour during the summer or early September to avoid encountering too much snow on the higher sections.
