Cycling Through a Pandemic is a project sharing the stories and perspectives of cyclists from ten countries around the world, who embarked on journeys in their home countries during the pandemic. This is Jacob Myhre's story.
Known as 'The Loneliest Highway' as it's located in one of America's most isolated regions, Route 50 in Nevada is a passage through time and geology as a desolate environment comes alive while you ride through it.
The highway took us across dried lake beds, some stretching for 50 miles (80 km) or more, and through sleepy towns as it winds its way across Nevada. Each day was dictated by the sun, waking as it rose and resting when it set. Nights can be freezing and days can boil the rubber off your tires, so you have to be careful to plan your dates of passage!
When we finally reached the salt flats after this arid landscape we could feel an immense sense of accomplishment, and realise our dreams of glistening lake beds, cracked slabs of earth, and layers of mountain ranges above us.
