Everyone knows the famous saying "Die spinnen, die Römer!". But what hardly anyone knows is that we still benefit today from the fact that the Romans were the first in Europe to build an extensive artificial network of paths and roads. Primarily, it served the construction and preservation of their empire and promoted trade. But even then, all sorts of travelers were on the roads: apart from the military, there were businessmen, pilgrims, craftsmen, and even vagabonds on the roads - only the cyclists were missing.

The project "Via Julia" finally set itself the task, after two millennia, to make these old roads accessible to cycle tourism. The idea was not so far-fetched, because even then the roads were supposed to run "as straight as a string and evenly" through the country - ideal for today's cyclist. By the way, during the Roman Empire, the Via Julia was an important trading and military road between Augsburg (AVGVSTA VINELICVM) and Salzburg (IVVAVVM), only the well-sounding name was still missing. This was only given to the road in the course of the project.

On a route of 329 kilometers or optionally 223 Roman miles, the long-distance cycle path Via Julia leads from Günzburg via Augsburg to just before Salzburg to the Austrian border. On your journey, you will pass Celtic cult sites, skirt the outskirts of Munich, occasionally spot the last remnants of the old Roman road at the roadside, and feast your eyes on the wonderful Alpine panorama above Lake Chiemsee. Further highlights are Rosenheim, the Eggstätt-Hemhofer lake district, and of course Salzburg - because this collection does not end like the long-distance cycle path at the Austrian border, but takes you right into the heart of the Austrian metropolis.

Even if the couriers of the Roman emperor managed up to 88 kilometers a day back then thanks to the road construction and some horse changes, this is still no reason to emulate them today - at most maybe you are riding an e-bike. So that you can also enjoy the diverse landscape and culture without your shadow getting longer and longer in the evening, I have divided this collection into seven pleasant stages for you. Nevertheless, there will be no lack of sporting challenge, because despite the flat elevation profile, the stages are not entirely without effort with an average of 50 kilometers per day.

Coming from Swabia, most of the route takes you right through Upper Bayern, which quickly becomes apparent in the landscape of enjoyment: rustic beer gardens, countless breweries, and hearty Bavarian cuisine make your cyclist's heart beat faster and provide the necessary energy boost. As a little treat, the Via Julia offers you an alternative route just before Rosenheim. This runs directly along the Mangfall and is especially enjoyable in summer, as the idyllic little river invites you to take a dip at many bathing spots - a comfort that the Romans would certainly have appreciated.
