The human brain is an efficient machine, conserving energy by only storing information that is important for survival or day-to-day functioning. Chances are, the full list of things you need to pack and do before a day adventure might not be stored in your head. We’ve got your back. Behold the pre-adventure checklist for day adventures with komoot.
✅ Download your route offline or make sure you’ve synced your bike computer
Phone batteries sometimes die. If you’re planning to stay on track using komoot, ensure your route is stored offline so you can conserve said battery. If you’re relying on your bike headset, make sure you’ve synced your route with your device.
✅ Charge your device and battery pack (or pack a charger)
Still on the topic of phone batteries, if you have a portable power bank, ensure it’s charged before you leave. (Same goes for your phone, watch or bike computer!) If you don’t have a power bank but you’ll be near civilization, pack your charger in case you need to make a detour to juice up your gadgets.
✅ Share your route with a friend
Standard safety procedure this one: If you're going somewhere remote, with no signal or tricky terrain, always tell somebody where you’re planning on walking or riding. Regardless of the type of navigation you’re using, things don’t always go to plan. And if things do go awry, it's helpful if someone knows where you are (or at least where you’re supposed to be).
✅ Pack some form of identification
See point above about things not going to plan.
✅ Make sure you have cash on you
Pay for an emergency coffee, an emergency taxi, or some other unanticipated expense. Money can sometimes help you get out of sticky situations (or into good ones, like finding a surprise cake stall en route), and not everywhere you find yourself will have an ATM machine.
✅ Check the weather and pack accordingly
Before you step out the door, double check the weather forecast. Then use that intel to ensure you’ve packed the right back-up items.
extra warm layer and rain coat
Sun hat and sunblock
✅ Headtorch or bike lights
This is less relevant in long, drawn out summer days, but if you’re planning a long day outside of the warm season, packing your lights won’t hurt, even if you don’t end up using them.
✅Tissues or a wee rag
Noses run, wild wees are required, public loos run out of paper. If you don’t have a strong bladder or are not a fan of the “drip-dry” approach, make sure you’ve got a plan B. If you’re using tissues, don’t forget to pack a rubbish bag. No one wants to encounter your used toilet paper near the trail, least of all the local wildlife.
✅ Basic first aid kit
If you’re heading out on a longer day, it never hurts to have some basic first aid supplies to hand. Particularly if you’re headed somewhere more remote. Think antiseptic, plasters, and perhaps an antihistamine. For a more detailed first aid kit break down, read this guide on the Adventure Hub.
