Adrien Ries (1933-1991), born in Biwels, was a Luxembourg lawyer, economic expert and author. From 1962 to 1986 he made a career at the European Commission. In 1973 he coined the term Nordstad for the urban settlement area Diekirch / Ettelbruck. In addition to many economic and political publications, he is remembered by many Luxembourgers as a versatile author of diaries, travel reports and newspaper columns. He was an avid hiker and walked thousands of kilometers through Luxembourg and Europe. The 50 km circuit around the 6 municipalities of the "Nordstad" would certainly not have been too far for him.If the 50 km is too long for you, you can divide the tour at Diekirch and Ettelbrück into three circular hiking trails.

This path leads through meadows, streams and forests. It illustrates the development of the Éislek landscape due to its management. The path leads out of Baschleiden towards the northeast, following the small stream. Through a forest area it goes to the legendary "Hellekessel". It ends here
the "Hämichterbaach" in the reservoir. The way back continues through the forest to "Laangescht". It then goes back to Baschleiden via meadows and fields.

The nature trail leads through one of the most beautiful and best preserved valleys in Luxembourg. The path touches numerous locations, e.g. B. Lohhecken, oak-hornbeam forest, sparing with conifers, gorse heaths, sunny rocky slopes and meadows.
The area is known for its plant diversity and is the only home known in Luxembourg for some endangered species that are on the "red list". In spring, the wild daffodils and pasque flowers attract numerous visitors.

This circular hiking trail focuses primarily on the aspect of nature conservation and extensive use in the area of the "Misärshaff".
The path leads through meadows and pastures that have been used extensively to increase biodiversity for several years. Here, nature conservation is implemented through extensive agricultural use. In this context, the northern slope above the "Misärshaff" was converted from a mineral-fertilized mowing pasture to an extensively grazed area all year round. In this context it is possible to take a look at the accommodation of a small herd of Angus in the first third of the circular route.

This circular route shows how the use of natural resources (water, wood, slate stone) has influenced the landscape and nature on the Obersauer over the past centuries.
The aspect of nature conservation and extensive use is also explained. The circular route leads along the Sauer through forests and moist valley bottoms, which form habitats for a species-rich, sometimes rare, flora and fauna. With a little luck, some wild birds can be observed in their natural environment. Furthermore, the circular route offers some spectacular views.

The nature trail leads you along the Wiltz through oak low forests up to the "Hockslay", further to the lookout point "Ueweschlaed" and back over dry grass to Kautenbach. Along the way you will be given information about the different habitats and the plants growing there. The focus here is on the use of these plants in the past and today.

The nature trail leads you through the Conzefenn nature reserve.
Here you can expect a wide variety of wetlands, which lie along the two small rivers Kailsbach and Fennbach. The arnica, a typical plant of this area, will accompany you.
The Conzefenn is part of an old cultural landscape, in which you will find previously used lean meadows with arnica and bristle grass, but also bog areas.
