A classic mountain route only half an hour from Reykjavík. Hengilssvæðið (the Hengill area) is a very geothermally active area, full of bubbling mudpots, steaming vents and whining fumaroles. The geology is interesting and varied, though largely characterised by altered palagonite, i.e. palagonite tuff
