For full details, see notesfromthenorth.mystrikingly.com/blog/kistufell-and-gunnlaugsskard. Alternative route up Esja: a hike up a steep and technical ridge to a wide bowl. Interesting geology, exhilarating climb, fantastic views across the Faxaflói and to Reykjavík. Instead of the more usual circuit across the plateau, we explored the whale-tail-shaped mountain of Kistufell east of the pass, which provides good views towards Þingvallavatn and in Mosfellsdalur. Note: 1) we began traipsing across the plateau but changed out minds (-1.5km); 2) we camped at point b--if you're not camping, you'll obviously have to do the 4km and 500m of descent back to the busstop, making the route roughly 16km there and back.
