Today's ride took us from Bamlach along a mountain road along the southern Black Forest. The view of the silhouette of the Black Forest mountain range on a summer morning is truly euphoric. Then we descended to Weil am Rhein and into Basel. From there, it was only another 10km to beautiful Rheinfelden

The route initially runs 50km along the old, no longer navigable Rhine-Rhone Canal. In this overgrown natural setting, you can see otters, beavers, herons, and storks, and if you open your mouth while cycling, you can fill your mouth with insects like a whale. After 25km, the path becomes a gravel road

My school French is slowly coming back and I'm having fun trying it out. Unfortunately, most of the Alsatians immediately answer me in German. No matter, I just keep babbling about baguette, tartelette, boeuf and beurre. The trip went from Lutzelbourg (Lorraine) via Saverne to Strasbourg and then another

The Saar becomes the Sarre and the lock becomes the Ecluse. Today we continued up the Saar into Alsace. In France it is a canal with around 20 locks with a height difference of 4-5m each. There are lots of houseboats along the way, but I would get fed up with waiting in front of each lock. I drove around

Today was a loop ride. There's the famous Saar Loop with its winding viewing platform, but there are countless other loops. I give the Saar Cycle Path 4.5 out of 5 stars: 100 km of the best asphalt, fantastic views, no cars, and hardly any inclines. A small deduction for the lack of rest stops. This

Heavy rain, all night. So I packed up the tent dripping wet. My sleeping bag was damp too, as were my clothes. But no problem, because I'm going to the Trier youth hostel, where I can finally wash and dry my wet, dirty gear. For the last five days, the squeaking brake pads with every revolution have

100km of Vennbahn. Fantastic. I turned into Roetgen right next to the campsite and didn't get back down until Luxembourg. The route is paved with the best asphalt, no cars, gradients of 2-3%, and a maximum of nature. It's strange that the Prussians put so much effort into this railway line, which was

A joker wrote "Rain" above the "Wurm" sign. Today's tour between Heinsberg and Kerkrade led along gravel and forest paths along the wild Wurm River. This river actually still flows northward in its millennia-old riverbed, winding wild curves. From Kerkrade, the route heads toward Aachen, and you never

Checked off. On-off rain plus wind plus 70km of cycle paths next to federal highways. I simply planned badly. Komoot should have a bold red warning for federal highways. At least the German economy doesn't seem to be doing so badly, because one truck after another whizzed past me with its cargo. The
