Spectacular and easy acessible coastal walk with stunning 360° views. Another possibility to watch humpback whales on their north- or southbound migration along NSW coastline is from the Sugerloaf Point Lighthouse and/or Treachery Headland.

Lovely walk along the coastline with opportunity to swim at Elizabeth Beach or Shelly Beach, so don't forget your budgie smugglers;) Important: Don't do the same mistake as us to try attempting the loop walk (second half goes along the lake). The lake bit was full of mosquitos and goes parallel to the road, so we turned around and crossed the ridge to get back onto the old track again.

A magical, easy, 1h walk to the bottom of a Canyon and back over the cliff with aboriginal art. 33 native mammal species (incl. 16 bat species), 144 bird, 27 reptile and more than 10 amphibian species have been spotted in this park. We saw bush wallabies close from the several benches and viewpoints - a fantastic little stroll off the beaten track, incl. a free and close to nature overnight experience! The nearby campground is the starting point. Very neat and tidy with a clean toilet and handwashing bassin.

Hatea River Walk to Whangarei Falls and returning via Kauri Treetop Walkway to the startpoint is an easy stroll, even for unfit people. The highlights really being the Whangerei Falls and the old and super huge Kauri trees - that last forest walk will remind you of Jurassic Park. The carpark/starting point also allows for a 1-night FREE stay in a campervan with public toilets nearby.

Really well maintained and picturesque bushwalk just outside Whangarei town bassin. We follow a brook and some little waterfalls slightly uphill on a wide enough pass for two people walking next to eachother. A really lovely hidden gem when you jist want to go for a litte walk or stretch your legs! The turnpoint is marked by the Mt. Parihaka lookout and Maori War memorial. From here you can see Whangarei town, harbour and surrounds. Ideal on a hot summers day, as the track is covered by native trees. Lovely on a late winters day as well when there are not many people around;)

Maungatapere is one of Northlands largest intact volcanic cones. It contains two nationally rare forest types: volcanic broadleaf bush and a hidden swamp maire crater forest. The native wood pigeon and fantails can be seen on this very quiet, almost only to locals known track. The track is very well marked with orange and pink triangles. The startingpoint is an inconspicuous double wooden gate to the right of a private property. Parking possible straight in front of the gate as the driveway is no longer in use.

3h roundtrip bushwalk through native forest, incl. Kauri trees and Panga fern. The track ends on a road in Raumanga, near Whangarei, but we recommed to turn around at the cow paddock. The signs say 2h one way, but thats when you really take it very slow. We did 2 stops and met only 2 people on the way and made it easily in 3h.

My favorite walk on the North Island of NZ! Best (quiet) time of the year is the off-season in late winter/ early-spring or autumn when the swell is high and the waves smashing against the rock cliffs you are just walking along. On this track you are always close to the waterline and will see some fantastic viewpoints equipped with benches to enjoy your view! The starting point is the carpark opposite to the Cove Café in Waipu. Access to the walk starts off already nice: crossing the creek that ends up at the beach. Recommended at low tide, but can be done to a certain extend at high tide, too: Be prepared to pull off your pants and walk knee to hip deep through the creek;) We did it-kinda fun! No cafés along the hike, except at Lang's beach in the high season, you will find Zippys café and Icetruck, so bring enough to drink and enjoy!!!
