Sugar Loaf Trail – Sugar Loaf Summit loop from Gilwern

Easy walk, with little to no exposure for those suffering from vertigo. The final loop at the end, through the ancient oak trees, is essential to do.

A beautiful walk and makes a difference from the usual Pen Y Fan direct route. The Pen Y Fan summit is easily reached, and not exposed on the south side at least, so fine for someone suffering from vertigo. But two things to note: - the descent to the first river stream and ascent onto the ridge are demanding and can be difficult for someone with acute vertigo; - the walk back at the end, around the reservoir, is a slog and often wet and muddy underfoot. And you don’t actually get into the reservoir woodland until the end of it. So it may be better to just walk back along the road to your start point.

Beautiful views east to Skirrid and Sugar Loaf, north to Hay Bluff and Talgarth, and west to Talybont. We did this on a sunny September day with a brisk northerly breeze, which made the anticlockwise direction the right one to take: wind on your back on the higher section.

An easy hike, for a rainy day. No particular strenuous parts. The Sweet Chestnut Tree on the River Grwyne is beautiful.

A demanding hike, rewarded with spectacular views. We did it as an improvisation, after being advised the return ridge walk on Sommet de la Basse was potentially dangerous and required a rope.

1 hour 45 minutes hike, mostly very good gradient, arriving at the Chalvet Take Off (East). A great morning hike!
