Really pleased I redid this route, as last time I aborted at pontypool. A very quiet and pleasant ride to Crosskeys, it quickly feels like you are in the open country with views of moors and the sea. There were short stretches on the A467 and A472, but they were manageable, and I seemed to find cycle paths and quiet roads. Shortly after Pontypool, I diverted onto a cycle path which as a disused railway was perfect. Note to self, review and adjust planned route to include these cycle paths. It's then a turn west to climb which is do oable (OK I stopped for a breather but no pushing). Then a long descent back to crosskeys. Definitely one to repeat, with quite a few train options if needed.
