To see what the lakes we've circled used to look like, today we cycle to the active Welzow open-cast mine 🚴♂️🚴♀️. It is the main supplier for the power plant and the "Schwarze Pumpe" briquette factory.

In ideal cycling weather 🌞, we head from Roßlau to Gräfenhainichen. We first cycle through the green Elbe meadows to Mildensee, where we carefully cross the B185 (a fatal accident for a cyclist in 2024 😭). Then it's on via Oranienbaum to Goltewitz and further through the heath to Ferropolis ⛓.

400 years ago today, on 25.04.1626, the Battle of Dessau on the Elbe took place in Roßlau during the Thirty Years' War. The armies of Count Mansfeld and Albrecht von Wallenstein faced each other. There were several thousand dead, and Roßlau was almost completely destroyed. A memorial plaque was unveiled today.
