About Anna Ronkainen
general route planning tips for Finland:
- whenever you can (in the north you really can’t), avoid primary roads with single and double digit numbers (in the south even triple digits), lots of high-speed car traffic often passing too close and generally narrow or non-existent shoulders
- the network of paved roads is quite sparse, on the other hand gravel roads are often smoother than the asphalt on smaller roads (but the condition can vary a lot so try to check in advance)
- the government provides open data on traffic volume and asphalt quality (roads maintained by municipalities not included, which is why the coloured lines end when approaching built-up areas), a great resource for route planning: suomenvaylat.vayla.fi/link/6/380618/6698259/3496+28+tiestotiedot:Liikennemaarat_velho++826+100+tiestotiedot:SV_Paallysteiden_kunto++793+100+default/?lang=en
- most trains do take bikes as well but long-distance trains require reservations, good luck getting one in the summer other than weeks in advance, commuter trains from Helsinki to Kirkkonummi, Tampere, Lahti and Kotka via Kouvola are turn-up-and-go though
- long-distance buses used to be great for travelling with a bike but nowadays often complicated or expensive (10–15 euro on top of the ticket) or impossible (e.g. most Onnibus services)

Hi! Thanks for the comments on the quality of the roads. I don't always understand that all the roads are just "mostly ok" but there are still "cracks" and etc. Would a rating of 1-10 be clearer?
