This marked the start of the second leg to Bordeaux, starting off my dad's house, through the sunflower-filled fields in the south of Vendee before heading into the Poitevin Marais National Park, a stunning network of canals with good sections of paths following the waterways and rivers. The tour starts with a gentle stretch of riding, first along the shores of Lac de Maine before crossing over the river to meet the Loire where the road stays flat travelling east towards Saumur.

It's a pan flat route following the gravel paths along the extremely pretty river Mayenne. You will be meet plenty of other bike tourers as you meander your way down the river past the many locks and lock keeper's cottages, some of which have been turned into restaurants and cafes.

My fiancee joined me for Day 2 to my mum's house in Stokes Bay near Portsmouth.
We took a popular gravel track along an old railway, said hello to some New Forest ponies and chose tarmac to get to the Hythe Ferry via picturesque Beaulieu.

This was a fairly tough encounter with the bike. Bonked badly over the three big climbs with all my heavy luggage. The Chartreuse offered some superb views before tackling the Vercors plateau which took me along the finish of the upcoming stage 16 of the TdF. Approaching the Col De Rousset from the backend
