Igreja Universitária Evangélica (Universitätskirche) Marburg

Over 700 years old and a beautiful church ⛪️. The special appeal is not only due to its architecture, which is well worth seeing, but also due to its fantastic position in the middle of the historic buildings of Marburg.

Not that easy to find or to recognize as a church building if you are not specifically looking for it and are not too familiar with the area. Simple, but very descriptive and interesting!

The former Kilianskapelle was built between 1180 and 1200 in Romanesque style as a market chapel for the parish of Sankt Martin zu Oberweimar.
This makes it the oldest surviving building in the heart of Marburg, located on the Schuhmarkt on Reitgasse in Marburg's upper town, not far from the old university.
On April 16, 1227, Marburg became an independent parish, but the Kilian was not the main parish church of the city, which was growing in the 13th century.
After the Landgraves of Hesse donated the parish of Marburg to the Teutonic Order in 1243, the city acquired rights to the parish in the 14th century.
