Part of the fortification of the Landgrave Castle.
The Witches Tower (White Tower) is located northwest of the high castle. For all visitors who use the northern entrance to the castle, the path leads directly over the former northern bastion to the tower.
Built in 1478 by the well-known master builder Hans Jakob von Ettlingen, the witch's tower used to serve as an advanced gun turret for the north-western flank protection of the castle.
Originally built as a four-storey building, the lower two storeys were filled in in the course of the seventeenth century. The 4-meter-thick masonry, consisting of large broken blocks, extends to around 2 meters below the roof approach of the tower. Above that there is a somewhat smaller masonry that protrudes a few centimeters outwards under the roof. These upper 2 meters were probably added later in the early 19th century. There is nothing left of the former, earlier loopholes and gun emplacements in the tower. Access to the tower is via a small external staircase.
From the 16th to the 19th centuries (1550 to 1866) the tower was used as a prison. The small barred cell windows can still be seen today.

It is always impressively beautiful, no matter from which side you approach the castle and the witch's tower. A beautiful sight that does not correspond to the usual photos of the Marburg Castle.
