On the church square (Kostelní náměstí) in Cheb (Eger) is the Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas - the oldest church in Eger. The church was built at the beginning of the 13th century as a Romanesque basilica. Soon after, however, it burned out and the subsequent repair was already in the Gothic style. The shape of the church, however, was also marked by the baroque and neo-Gothic reconstruction. The last architectural changes in 2008 gave the church its original, high towers, which were destroyed in the bombing raids at the end of World War II.

Eger's most monumental and oldest church, St. Nicholas and St. Elisabeth, was probably built on the model of the Bamberg Cathedral, which is over two hundred years older. The first written mention of it dates back to 1239, when the consecration of one of the altars, the altar of St. Anne, is mentioned. After a fire in 1742, the towers were rebuilt with baroque domes based on a design by Balthasar Neumann, who was born in Eger. On April 20, 1945, Cheb was bombed by Allied troops, and the church towers were damaged. After the war, they only received seven-meter-high provisional helmets. These remained for the next 63 years. It was not until 2008 that the Historical Cheb Foundation managed to repair the war damage: 26-meter-high conical helmets were made, copies of the neo-Gothic helmets from 1869, each with four smaller turrets at the corners. They were hoisted onto the church towers in July 2008.

Impressive church that has received its face again with the rebuilt Balthasar Neumann church towers in 2008.

Three naves of the same height result in a beautiful ribbed vault :-)

For 20 crowns or 1 euro you can visit the church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also climb the church tower for the same entrance fee, but you need the right change here.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Eger is dedicated, is - alongside Saint Martin - one of the most popular saints of all. His memorial day, December 6th, is probably known to almost every child in Germany - and far beyond.
On the eve of this day, children used to put their shoes or boots - which had of course been carefully polished - in front of the door so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts during the night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for children to put out a small gift of food for the donkey, Saint Nicholas's mount (according to another tradition, it was a white horse).

The tower is climbed via some steep, open wooden stairs. This might be a challenge for some 😉.

The church itself is also worth seeing and admission was free during our visit.

You can visit the crypt, where the sarcophagus of Countess Sidonie Schlick is on display.
It was discovered during archaeological work.

There are also other church objects on display in display cases.

Originally built in the 13th century as a Romanesque basilica, a fire broke out soon after. The destroyed parts were then rebuilt in Gothic style. Many structural changes were made over the centuries.
Thanks to the last renovation in 2008, the church got back its two high pyramid-shaped spires, which it lost in an Allied air raid in 1945.

The imposing Church of St. Nicholas and Elizabeth characterizes the old town of Cheb. The late Gothic hall and the Romanesque towers on both sides are well worth seeing.

This gigantic church is very beautiful to look at. Pay the 1€ and climb the tower. Once you get to the top you can open the windows to have a great view over Cheb. It's worth it 👍🏽

The view from the tower of the church is certainly the best over the city. For 1 euro, the ascent is quite easy to do with a new set of stairs.

Construction of St. Nicholas Church likely began between 1220 and 1230. Only the west portal, parts of the north portal, and the lower sections of the east towers remain from the former basilica.

The floor plan resembles that of Bamberg Cathedral, which probably served as a model. The three-aisled nave, the presbytery, and the sacristy date from the Gothic period. After a fire in 1742, the towers were rebuilt with Baroque domes based on a design by Balthasar Neumann, who was born here. In April, the roof was destroyed by a bombing raid.
