  • The locals simply call it the E-Church and, along with the castle, it is the city's defining building. It was built from 1235 at the foot of the Marburg Castle Hill and consecrated in 1283. The three-aisled hall church is considered to be the oldest purely Gothic church in Germany. The Teutonic Order built it with significant support from the Landgraves of Thuringia in honor of St. Elizabeth of Thuringia. It was erected over Elisabeth's tomb, which made the church one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the West in the late Middle Ages. For hikers it is a welcome starting and finishing point and a feast for the eyes.
