      Vidå Sluse or Vidåslusen (German Wiedau lock) is a drainage sluice (sluice) near the Danish town of Højer on a North Sea dike in the Wadden Sea. This dike acts as a protective barrier against storm surges. The lock was built in 1981 to replace the Højer Sluse after the violent storm surge of 1976, when the water level was 4.98 meters above normal. The self-closing lock is open about half of the day at low tide. It consists of three concrete chambers, each with two wooden lock gates. Protection against storm surges and the associated high water levels were taken into account during construction. On average, the water level only rises above the dike once every 200 years.

      The Vidå (German Wiedau) drains a little more than 10,000 hectares of marshland. The lock ensures that water from the Vidå can flow into the Wadden Sea, while preventing water from the Wadden Sea from flowing into the Vidå when the water level in the Wadden Sea rises higher than inside the dike. The maximum discharge is 202,550 l / s.

      The river runs through the Tonder Marsch (Danish Tøndermarsken), a combined drainage and irrigation system that was built in the 1920s. From the marsh, the water is pumped into the river. From the higher areas east of Tønder the water flows into the Vidå in a natural gradient.

      The Vidå system is divided into ten guilds (Danish Laug or Lav). Each of these guilds is headed by an elected board of directors (kogsinspektør in Danish), who in turn manage the dyke cooperative. The tasks of the dike cooperative (Digelag in Danish), which is responsible for drainage, are set out in the law for the Tøndermarsken from 1925 and an amendment from 1938. The state bears the costs for the operation and maintenance of the irrigation system in the Kögen. The landowners pay levee tax, which is used to operate the drainage pumps.
      At the lock there is a museum and a restaurant with a parking lot.

        The lock system has a viewing platform. When the weather is good you can see the Hindenburg Dam and Rømø. And see much more. There are lots of explanations all around.

        I always think it's great how functional buildings are made accessible for tourist purposes in Denmark.
