The northernmost Koog of North Friesland, its northwesternmost point forms the northernmost point of the German mainland. In the south the Koog borders on the Hindenburgdamm.
On the Danish side of the border, the Margarethe Koog directly follows, named after the Danish queen.
In 1982 the embankment of the two Kooge was completed as a German-Danish joint project. The area has been declared a nature reserve and is an important resting place for migratory birds.
