It was never defeated, never conquered: Rosenberg Fortress is one of the most beautiful and largest fortifications in Europe.
The former Bamberg bishop's castle and later state fortress on the Rosenberg rises steeply above the old town of Kronach. The oldest surviving document mentioning the name "Rosenberg" dates from 1249.
The various construction phases are clearly recognizable, from the medieval keep to the walls and towers of the 15th and 16th centuries to the pentagon from the late baroque period, showing the ever-changing demands in the construction of defense systems over the centuries. The juxtaposition of medieval, renaissance and baroque fortification architecture gives the complex its important position in the history of German fortifications. The famous builders Maximilian von Welsch and Balthasar Neumann were involved in the expansion of the fortress.
The fortress has never been taken or defeated by enemies. In 1888 the city acquired the castle as a property of no military importance. The subterranean passage system, which can be visited as part of the fortress tours, is also particularly attractive.

Crana Historica takes place at Rosenberg Fortress once a year at Pentecost. A medieval festival on the entire castle grounds with many people in historical costumes pitching their tents around the castle.
