                      The church goes back to the Andreas monastery founded by Bishop Burkard in 748. In 986 Bishop Hugo renamed it the Benedictine monastery of St. Burkard and St. Burkard's bones were brought there. After a great fire in 1030, the church was rebuilt at its current location. The oldest, Romanesque area of the church was built by Abbot Willemund from 1033 and on Whit Monday 1042 in the presence of King Heinrich III. consecrated by Bishop Bruno. 1168-80 the portal vestibule ("paradise") was added. Abbot Konrad had the polygonal upper floors of the two eastern towers with the stone tower helmets built around 1250.

                      The church was part of the Benedictine monastery, which was converted in 1464 into the spiritual knight's monastery of St. Burkard. Under Provost Johann von Allendorf, construction of the polygonal east choir with the transept began in the 1490s. Its interior was not furnished until the middle of the 17th century. The former west choir was demolished under Prince Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn in the 1660s. The space was needed for new fortification walls and a circulation canal.
