The garden adjacent to the fortress is worth a visit at any time of the year. Above all, the koi carp are very nice to look at.

There are two Japanese gardens in Würzburg. The larger one is on the grounds of the State Horticultural Show from 1990, the smaller one next to the old crane. Both gardens were created through the partnership between Würzburg and the Japanese city of Ōtsu, which has existed since 1979.

The garden represents a miniature of the landscape around Otsu. Not only the Japanese landscape and its calm atmosphere, but also hopes and dreams should be expressed here. This garden is therefore much more than just an attractive combination of trees, bushes, water and stones.

The three main elements of the Japanese garden, mountains, lake and rivers represent the geographical surroundings of the city of Ōtsu, Lake Biwa, the largest Japanese inland lake, the Suzuko Mountains, the Nosaka Mountains and the Ibukii Mountains, as well as various rivers. Thanks to sensitive planning, the garden blends in harmoniously with the terrain rising towards the Marienberg Fortress thanks to the higher "mountains". The design framework of the garden is made up of rocks and stones. The 400 tons of granite boulders were selected by Japanese landscape architects in the Fichtel Mountains. From the highest point of the garden, the mountains run around the lake. The northern part descends in the middle and merges into a flat hilly landscape. The river has its source on the other side of the mountain. Its course is determined by small waterfalls, deep and shallow places. The bank was designed to be as natural as possible. Several large stones make it possible to cross the river. The river and a large waterfall feed the pond, which symbolizes Lake Biwa.

The island, connected to both banks by two bridges, has a mythological background. Its shape is reminiscent of a turtle, which is traditionally a symbol of immortality for the Japanese and Chinese.

In addition to the historic courtyard garden at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Würzburg Residence, the Japanese garden is another attractive sight and at the same time the "green lung" of Würzburg.

Garden of the Japanese twin town Ohmi. An island of calm, designed according to Zen principles. Very nice.

Due to the different themed gardens, designed by representatives of the Würzburg partner countries and cities, a great variety was created in the State Garden Show Park. The most visited of these is the Japanese garden. This was designed by gardeners from Otsu, represents a garden of inner peace and convinces with maple, anemones and Japanese cherries. Also worth seeing are the Scottish garden, which depicts a landscape from the Scottish highlands and has a stream, as well as the Norman country house. This was built by workers from Caen in traditional construction and consists of components from Normandy.

The Japanese garden is part of the old state garden show area from 1990. Today it is a public park that still attracts numerous visitors ... not without reason ;-)

On the occasion of the State Garden Show in 1990, the Japanese Garden was created in Würzburg as a contribution from the Japanese twin city Otsu through planning and with the support of the famous Japanese landscape architecture office of Prof. Nakane, thereby demonstrating in a certain respect the connection between the two cities.
The Japanese Garden is named after today's Shiga Prefecture, whose former name was Ohmi. Otsu is one of the larger towns in this region on Lake Biwa. It represents a miniature of the landscape around Lake Biwa, Japan's largest inland lake.

The style of the garden with artificial hills, forests, water source and circuit corresponds to the traditional Japanese gardening style, the so-called TSU-KIYAMA RINSEN KAIYU SHIKITEIEN. In Japan, people have been enjoying the varied perspectives of a garden for centuries and thereby gaining inner peace.

In 1811, in the real estate book of the Gemünden District Office, the first innkeeper known by name was the brewer Josef Brönner as the owner of the “Zum Kapaunen” inn, as the inn was then called. ... The name Koppen is a dialectic transformation of the old name "Kapaun".
