        Prince Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim ordered the construction of a new Main crane to simplify the handling of goods from the river to the countryside and vice versa. The way the crane worked was original.

        Inside the building there was a treadmill and pulleys operated by human power. In contrast to the adjoining warehouse, which was destroyed in March 1945, the old crane survived the Second World War without major damage.

                              The Alte Kranen is a baroque style harbor crane and one of the landmarks of Würzburg. It was built from 1767 to 1773 according to plans by Franz Ignaz Neumann. The client was Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, who wanted to make the trade route by water more usable for the city. The building soon became a symbol of the city. The area historically served as a trading center, today it is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, especially in summer.

                              The old crane stands to the right of the Main between the old Main bridge and the Friedensbrücke. It forms an ensemble with the old customs and hall house (the latter name refers to the importance of the salt trade) and the crane bastion with a corner pavilion. There used to be a crane keeper's house above the stairway. There were warehouses next to the crane. An old paved street, the former Kärrnergasse, leads through the building ensemble.

                              In the middle of the 19th century, trade shifted from the Main to the railroad. In 1846 the old crane was shut down and a new iron crane was erected 50 meters down the river Main. It was a stationary hand slewing crane operated by the Würzburger Handelsverein. Two almost identical cranes can still be found in Bamberg on the left Regnitzarm not far from the old town hall. In 1922 this crane had also had its day and was therefore dismantled again. For the handling of goods on the Main, the old port had meanwhile been laid out downstream.

                              The old crane was spared the destruction in World War II and became a symbol of survival. At the Kranenkai, 900 tons of fire rubble from the city was loaded onto ships every day and transported away. To commemorate this there is a memorial plaque and a rubble trolley (rubble clearance memorial) north of the crane.
