Ribe is Denmark's oldest city.

The bishopric of Ribe, with its imposing cathedral, is Denmark's oldest city. This former Viking trading center, with its idyllic, listed town center, offers a whole range of attractions: the narrow streets with their historic atmosphere, the medieval Ribe Town Hall, the Art Museum, St. Catherine's Church and Monastery, a toy museum with antique dolls, tin cars, and wooden toys... not to mention the many small shops and cozy cafés. Just a few minutes' drive from Ribe lies the Wadden Sea, with its endless, open landscape.

No matter which side you approach, Ribe is visible from afar. The silhouette of the unequal cathedral towers stands out strikingly from the marsh. Ribe was built at the intersection of two trade routes between northern and southern Europe and from the North to the Baltic Sea. Traders continually brought new fashions, techniques and trends to the city. Christianity also gained a foothold here for the first time in the empire of Thor & Co. Ansgar, a missionary from the north, built the first wooden church in the middle of the 9th century. A century later, Ribe was a bishop's seat and from the 12th century onwards it was also a royal residence.
