Today's barque "Alexander von Humboldt" was 1906 on the Bremen shipyard AG "Weser" initially as a lightship under the name "Reserve. Sonderburg "built. The name referred to their function as a reserve fire ship, which was located in Sonderburg on the island of Alsen, which at that time still belonged to the German Empire. Equipped with lantern mast and beacon, the ship served as a floating navigation maritime sign in changing positions.

After changing operations in the North and Baltic Sea, the ship got a permanent place in front of the entrance to the Kiel Bay and the Northeast Sea Canal. Under the name "Kiel" she anchored there for two decades. After the fixed lighthouse Kiel was built in 1967, she continued her unsettled life as a reserve fire ship until she got her second permanent place in the German Bight in October 1983.

In the 80s, the time of the manned lightships came to an end. The position "Weser" was the last station as a lightship before the ship was decommissioned. With the decommissioning as a lightship began her second major career as a Sail Trainig ship "Alexander von Humboldt".
