“There is a mill over 100 years old in the ramparts. In this oasis of calm you can have breakfast, eat and drink in the green. On the way from the main train station to the city center, the view almost inevitably hangs on the mill in the ramparts. Embedded in flower beds, the mill invites you to take a little detour. The restaurant offers international dishes, supplemented by regional and seasonal specialties. The historic mill is also ideal for family celebrations of all kinds. The bar area under the stars offers a special atmosphere for 15 people.

Since about 1815 there was a windmill on the Gießhaus bastion, which destroyed a fire in 1832. In 1833, a windmill was built in the same place by mill builder Berend Erling. It has been owned by the city of Bremen since 1889. It was restored in 1898 and 1950 after being damaged by fire or war. The mill operated as a grain mill until 1947. In 1998 it was completely renovated in accordance with the guidelines of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, thereby renewing the wing and gallery and converting the lower two floors for a catering business.

Construction, technology

The Herdentorswallmühle is a gallery Dutch type windmill with a five-storey, octagonal base made of clinker bricks. The four louver blades have a diameter of 24 meters and are equipped with brake flaps for speed control. The wind direction is automatically adjusted by a wind rose. The mill has three operational stone grinding aisles. A bag box is used to sieve the flour. The mill is also equipped with an elevator, a peeling machine and a wind sweeper.
