The Gardena pass, located at an altitude of 2,121 metres, is one of the most important Dolomite passes. The Gardena pass, in fact, connects Val Badia with Val Gardena. The slope that goes up from Corvara in Badia is longer and more difficult than the one that starts from Selva di Val Gardena. From the pass it is possible to admire the Sella and Cir groups.

The Gardena Pass is one of the four Sellaronda passes and can be reached from both Corvara and Selva. It is located at an altitude of 2,121 meters below the mighty north face of the Sella massif. At the start in Val Gardena, you first go to Plan de Gralba and continue to climb over serpentines. The road now leads spectacularly below the north face of the Murfreitspitzen before it gets steeper again shortly before the transition. The average gradient is eight percent over 10.5 kilometers and 560 meters in altitude. Alternatively, Corvara can also be chosen as the starting point. The route is about a kilometer shorter.

Great to drive out of Selva. You can park well and cheaply at the cable car station.
The beginning is crisp up to the junction Grödnerjoch / Sella, but then drive loosely to the top of the pass as there are longer flat sections in between. You could eat something upstairs, in the cold seasons it is advisable to leave quickly so as not to cool down

Beautiful route between the rock towers of the Dolomites. The almost park-like landscape at the foot of the rugged rock towers is great and the track is almost ideal for racing. The slope is even, the road is well run and also in the downhill a real pleasure. The whole Sella Ronda is very popular in the summer with all road users, who really wants to enjoy the Val Gardena, is recommended to drive in the early morning.

The Gardena pass is located in the heart of the Dolomites, nestled between imposing massifs: to the south lies the Sella, to the west the Sassolungo, to the north the Cir group, (located in the Puez-Odle Natural Park). In the vicinity of the pass there are several waterways, including the Rio Frea, which feeds the Rio Gardena.

The pass is the starting point for many hiking trails. Among others, from here depart itineraries that lead to the Dantercepies valley, to the Pisciadù refuge and to the Cir group. Going a little further into Val Badia, you will find the starting point of the Tridentina via ferrata, one of the most famous in the Dolomites, and of the Pisciadù via ferrata. To the north, on the other hand, the via ferratas that go up to the Gran Cir and Pizzes de Cir are traced. The Alta via n. 2, which goes from Bressanone to Feltre.

In the surrounding area there are numerous ski lifts and ski slopes, including the famous "Dantercepies" and "Cir" which, starting from the pass, reach Selva. All lifts are part of the Dolomiti Superski area. The Gardena is part of the famous skiing and cycling ring known as the Sellaronda, together with the Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo passes.

It's easier to ride from the side of Val Gardena. The view is even better when you are at the top station of Cir ski lift. You can also reach that spot by mountain bike. There are really cool downhill sections to Corvara from Passo Gardena.

Gardena Pass. The Frosty

This is probably the section I like least of the Sellaronda. The side of Val Gardena is practically always in the shade. In addition, there is a small but cold descent before tackling the final and more demanding stretch to reach the pass. There is no sun and the mountain looms over us on our right, with the stony ground that always seems to be on the verge of collapsing and dragging us into the abyss.

The legs get cold and the ascent to Passo Gardena becomes more difficult, which otherwise would not present great difficulties. The cold, however, is amply rewarded by the view on the stretch traveled, which appears grandiose and terrible. After the brow, Val Badia welcomes us with a long and fun descent that takes us first to Colfosco and finally to Corvara.
