            The Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Toulouse is the Roman Catholic cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Toulouse. Predominantly Romanesque and Gothic components determine their appearance. The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1862.
            Today's cathedral was built on the foundations of a chapel after the previous building was destroyed in 1071. Saint Saturninus, first bishop of Toulouse, had this chapel built. It was destroyed 150 years later and rebuilt by Saint Exuperius. The construction history of today's church is characterized from the beginning by constant changes in planning during the ongoing construction work. The cathedral chapter has existed since 1259.

            In 1794, during the French Revolution, the largest bell, the Cardailhac, weighing twelve or thirteen tons, was thrown from the bell tower, penetrating the ground and breaking.

            In 1938, the state completed the previously incomplete north transept facade after neighboring buildings were demolished, exposing this portion of the building.

                  With its architecture built over several centuries, its different styles and its somewhat crooked appearance, this cathedral is also worth a visit for the organs that seem to be floating in the air.

                  Unusual, complex, eclectic: so many adjectives that define the style of this cathedral built in the 5th century. The current building was mainly built in the 13th century. The remarkable medieval building combines two Gothic styles: the massive, mighty Southern Gothic and the slender, light-filled Northern Gothic.

                  Richly decorated choir stalls, baroque main altar, grilles and stained glass windows offer a real feast for the eyes. The chapels, decorated with altarpieces, paintings and relics, form a series of small museums.

                  Also impressive is the organ case from the early 17th century in the form of a swallow's nest, the oldest in the city.
                  Riquet, the famous architect of the Canal du Midi, is buried here.

                      Saint Stephen, to whom the cathedral (bishop's church) "Saint-ETIENNE" in Toulouse is dedicated, is one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and, according to the biblical accounts in the "New Testament", is also the first martyr (martyr witness) of early Christianity. The church commemorates his death on the second day of Christmas, December 26th.

                      When Stephen expressed his vision of the open heavens "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts chapter 7 verse 55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.
