The Basilica of Saint-Sernin is a landmark of Toulouse. The building combines the type of a gallery basilica and a relay hall. The pilgrim church was built over the tomb of Saint Saturninus, bishop of Toulouse, who died a martyr's death in 250 (Sernin is a modified form of Saint-Saturnin). It is part of the French Way of St. James from Arles to Santiago de Compostela and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Like many buildings in Toulouse, the ville rose, it was built of red stone, mostly brick. It has an octagonal bell tower with a carillon.

The construction period was between 1077 and 1119 (altar consecration 1096). Saint-Sernin is the largest surviving Romanesque church in France. The size of the church is due to its function as a pilgrimage church. The total length is 115 m, the transept depth is 64 m, the height of the central nave is 21.10 m, the width of the nave is 32.50 m, the height of the bell tower is 65 m. Together with the Sainte-Foy of Conques, Saint-Sernin is one of the Peak achievements of the Romanesque Languedoc.

As the largest Romanesque church in France and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the basilica has welcomed pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela for centuries.

It is one of Toulouse's landmarks and impresses with its majestic and light-filled architecture made of brick and stone. The majestic and light-filled church was built between the 11th and 14th centuries in honor of Saint Saturninus, the city's first bishop. The place represents an important stage on the Way of St. James and is an invitation to reflection. The enormous dimensions are ideal for a leisurely tour among the many relics.
A 21 meter high nave, whose barrel vault rests on richly decorated capitals, leads to the choir with its gilded wood and marble canopy. In the richly decorated transepts you will discover impressive medieval wall paintings.
It is also possible to get to the crypts, where you can particularly admire the enameled reliquary of the True Cross of Christ in the form of a sarcophagus.
