At 12,300 m², the Place du Capitole is one of the largest city squares in Europe. The square is dominated by the Capitol (the town hall) with its 128-meter-long facade. But the gallery opposite with 29 arcades is also impressive.
The Occitan Cross / Tolosan Cross by the artist Raymond Moretti has been in the middle of the square since 1994. It has a diameter of 18 meters. The 12 points represent the 12 hours of daylight and the 12 months. The artist added the 12 signs of the zodiac to this. The cross was once the coat of arms of the Counts of Toulouse. In southern France it is an important symbol in many city coats of arms, signs of political administrative units and cultural institutions.
