The church of San Vitale in Ravenna, probably begun in 537 and consecrated in 547 to St. Vitalis, is one of the most important church buildings of the Late Antiquity-Early Byzantine period. It combines architectural forms from the Eastern Roman Empire with building techniques typical of the then Italy. It originated in a time of upheaval, when the East Roman Emperor Justinian I was at war with the East Gothic kingdom in Italy. The church, which was built as a central building, is famous for its interior mosaics, especially the portraits of Justinian and his wife Theodora in the lower apse walls. With the other early church buildings in Ravenna, San Vitale has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. In 1960 she received by Pope John XXIII. the honorary title of Basilica minor.
