The little church is on Via Corrado Ricci, in the historic center, and it's not easy to spot. It was built in Baroque style by Antonio Serri between 1748 and 1750 based on a design by the Camaldolese father Fausto Pelliciotti da Lucca (? -1752), author of a number of furnishings in the Classense library.

The building was built on or near an earlier church that appears in some documents from 1076 called Santa Maria in Luminaria or delle Luci.
The church, which is preceded by a small courtyard and a gate, is also called "adoration", always alluding to Maria Magdalena, the evangelical figure who washed the Lord's feet with tears and wiped them with his hair, and rises today above street level.
