The Civic Tower of Ravenna is better known to its residents as the Leaning Tower due to its particular inclination due to landslides of the terrain below
The Civic Tower of Ravenna is one of the city's symbolic monuments. It is a 12th century noble tower that today stands in Via Ponte Marino, but in the past it overlooked the urban section of the Padenna River. The first documented mention of it as the city's noble tower dates back to 1202.

According to legend, the tower belonged to the Guiccioli family (Lord Byron was a guest in their palace) and was nicknamed the "Butcher's Tower" in reference to the game shops on Via Ponte Marino. There are two phases of construction of the tower. A first dates from the 6th century and a second from the period between the 12th and 13th centuries.

Originally the tower was 39 meters high, but due to the subsidence of the ground it took on the characteristic slope that still characterizes it today, earning it the nickname “Leaning Tower”. This led to stability and safety issues which resulted in the upper section being dismantled and reduced to 26 meters. In 1320 the tower became the property of the municipality, hence the name “Citizens' Tower”. For several centuries, the tower's bells have rung to warn citizens of events or dangers. Some documents show that until this time the bell ringer, who was responsible for ringing the bells, lived in the lower part of the tower. This lasted until 1915, when the tower fell into disuse.

Currently, the lower part of the tower is wrapped in scaffolding to ensure its stability. Unfortunately, they cover two ancient marble reliefs that are incorporated into an exterior. They depict a 3rd century Roman bas-relief of a man on horseback and a destroyed head, which is said to have inspired the Romagna proverb “Zarchê Mariola par Ravêna” (looking for something very close and not finding it).
