Bishop Megingoz built a memorial building on this site in the 8th century to commemorate the suffering.
In 1060, St. Adalbero founded Neumünster Abbey. This monastery got a two-story church, which was expanded to the east over the years.
In the 14th century, painting began in the church. Years later in the 17th century the church was given a vault and was repainted. The new paintings were depicted in the Renaissance era.
From 1711 to 1722 the former west choir was demolished and a new west building was built in the Baroque style by Joseph Greising.

In the middle of Würzburg's city center, in the immediate vicinity of Kilian's Cathedral, the dome of the Neumünster Church rises and has a decisive influence on Würzburg's cityscape.
According to tradition, the Irish wandering bishop Kilian died a martyr's death together with his companions Kolonat and Totnan on the spot where Neumünster stands today. According to recent research, Bishop Megingoz built a memorial building on this spot in the eighth century to keep the memory of the place of martyrdom alive. The first two Würzburg bishops, Megingoz and his predecessor Burkard, were also buried in that church after their deaths.
Around the year 1060, Saint Adalbero founded the Neumünster Abbey, into which the first canons from the Würzburg Abbey of Saint Stephan moved. The newly founded abbey received a two-story church, which was renovated by 1250 and extended to the east. The monastery played an important role in the Middle Ages in the transmission of Middle High German and Latin texts: As early as the 13th century, the monastery had its own library and the minstrel Walter von der Vogelweide found his final resting place in the Kreuzgarten.

The Neumünster (also Neumünster St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist) is a former collegiate (Stift Neumünster, Kollegiatstift Neumünster) and its church (Neumünsterkirche) in Würzburg in Bavaria in the diocese of Würzburg.

At the site of today's Neumünster, Bishop Megingaud of Würzburg (in office from 754 to February 769) probably erected a memorial building, the so-called Salvatordom, which kept alive the memory of the place of martyrdom of Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan. Bishop Burkard (bishop from 742 to February 754 and died on February 2, 755 in Homburg am Main) of Megingaud was buried in this church first and later Megingaud himself. However, Megingaud died on September 26, 783 in the Benedictine abbey of Neustadt am Main and the sandstone for his coffin undoubtedly comes from quarries around Neustadt. The sarcophagus is now in the crypt of the Neumünster. The inscription on his tombstone is the oldest monumental inscription in Franconia after Roman times.
