The ancient Roman road Via Iulia Augusta, built during the reign of Emperor Augustus, led from Aquileia northward into the province of Noricum, across the Monte Croce Carnico Pass. For centuries, it was the most important link between Carnia and Carinthia, enabling the exchange of communications and goods. The name VIA IULIA AUGUSTA refers to the Roman road that leads north from Aquileia and forks where the Fella joins the Tagliamento.
