The history of the island of Grado is linked to that of two famous cities: Aquileia and Venice. Grado was a port, a place of refuge and ultimately the most important opponent of the Roman trading city of Aquileia. For Venice it was the “mother” from a historical and religious point of view (it gave him the title of patriarch).

During the 5th and 6th centuries AD, due to the recurring barbarian invasions and the dangers of the sea, the island of Grado became a fortress: the Castrum gradese. It was here that the bishops of Aquileia found shelter and had churches built in a magnificent style. Today you can admire the massive foundation and parts of the elevation of the old walls of the castrum.

The late Roman complex of the city can still be recognized by the calli of the old town and its topography.

At Campo di Patriachi you can admire the magnificent early Christian buildings: the basilicas of Santa Maria delle Grazie and Sant'Eufemia, the baptismal chapel and the lapidarim

The port of Grado is right in the center of the island, between the old town (the Castrum) and the pedestrian zone. It conveys real lagoon flair because the sea runs through the city in a Y-shape (actually the opposite of a Y-shape, since the Y points to the south) and like a canal. Originally, the west side of the harbor marked the border with the sea, but the Austrians built the other side after 1815, giving the harbor its idyllic shape and design.

After crossing the bridge over the lagoon, you enter Grado where the Alpe Adria route ends.
The city is definitely worth a visit, don't miss the narrow alleys of the historic center and the beach famous for having very hot sand (in fact, it is exposed to the south).

Grado is an interesting destination at the end of the Alpe Adria cycle path. The lagoon city has a lot to offer, beautiful street bars, old town and promenades. Just a few days of swimming without being here.
