The Barbarine is one of the most famous features of Saxon Switzerland. Her fairy-tale character inspired already in the 19th century storytellers and mountaineers to make her part of the history of the region. According to a legend, the Barbarine is said to be a petrified virgin petrified by her mother out of disobedience and now dwelling there as a memorial to disobedient children. To a part of their fame also contributes to the mountaineering first ascent of the sandstone needle in 1905.

It is an adventurous worthwhile walk to this rock. It goes over ladders and stairs and then through narrow crevices. As a reward then the view of this lonely rock.

"The Barbarine is the best-known free-standing rock in the German part of the Elbsandsteingebirge.The 42.7 m high pinnacle is considered a landmark of Saxon Switzerland.It was climbed on 19 September 1905 for the first time by mountaineers and was on 13 December 1978 a natural monument after the rock had been closed to climbing three years earlier.
