The area of the current park was acquired by Caspar Voght in the period from 1785 to 1805 together with extensive estates (a total of approx. 260 ha) near the town of Flottbek. It was a largely uninhabited former cultivated country at the time. Voght's entire property consisted of four parts, which were grouped around a country house and are still recognizable in the cityscape today: Süderpark (today's Jenischpark), Norderpark (now a botanical garden), Osterpark (now a golf course) and Westerpark (initially a nursery area, park again today). Voght was inspired in the landscaping of his property by The Leasowes estate of the English poet William Shenstone. He planned an extensive ideal landscape with which he wanted to combine aesthetic and economic aspects, social responsibility and agricultural use. Together with the gardener James Booth, he designed a model farm in the form of a so-called rural farm as a sequence of picturesque landscapes that were accessed via a circular route. The result is a park landscape with agricultural land and buildings, forest areas and groups of trees that appear to be casually embedded.

A historically significant park in Groß Flottbek, dating back to Baron Voght. When Johann Caspar Freiherr von Voght died in 1839, he could look back on a fulfilling life. Endowed with a vast inheritance, he had worked as a landscape architect, agronomist, social reformer, and playboy, delighting noble ladies throughout Europe, yet mastering the art of fleeing at the crucial moment...

Together with the Scottish landscape gardener James Booth, Voght realized his dream of a "landscape paradise." The Baron had a tree nursery built, experimented with new cultivation methods, introduced new crops like the potato, and acted as a consummate host at his country house. However, while he devoted himself to his park and salon with great energy, he showed less and less interest in his business. Mismanagement and the political turmoil resulting from the Napoleonic blockade decimated his fortune, and the Baron was forced to sell in 1828. The buyer of the property was Martin Johann Jenisch (1793–1857).

The merchant and senator had the Jenisch House, named after him, built between 1831 and 1834. Today it is an outpost of the Altona Museum. Jenisch was the last owner of the park before the city acquired it in 1939 and opened it to the public.

The park's agricultural character is still evident today.
